Academic Regulations at Bihar Engineering University (BEU)

Transitioning into university life comes with academic freedom, but Bihar Engineering University (BEU) enforces strict academic ordinances designed to maintain institutional rigor across all 38 Government Engineering Colleges (GECs).

Every year, hundreds of students face detentions, debarments, or Year Backs simply because they were unaware of the official university rules. This article explains the key academic regulations every BEU student must adhere to.

The 75% Attendance Mandatory Clause

Under BEU Academic Ordinance Regulation 6.1:

  • A student is required to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in lectures, practical classes, and tutorials for every subject registered in a semester to be eligible for the end-semester examination.
  • Medical Relaxation (65%): If a student falls short due to certified illness, hospitalization, or participating in authorized state/national sports or tech events, the Principal of the college may condone attendance up to 10%, bringing the minimum threshold to 65%. Official medical certificates from a registered medical practitioner must be submitted within 7 days of resuming classes.
  • Consequence of Shortage: Students with attendance below 65% are strictly debarred from appearing in the end-semester exam for that subject and must re-register when the course is offered again.

Carry-Over (Backlog) Examination Rules

Engineering courses are challenging, and encountering a backlog (carry-over paper) is not the end of the world. Here is how BEU handles carry-over examinations:

  1. When are Backlog Exams Conducted? Carry-over exams are conducted alongside regular semester examinations. Odd semester backlogs (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th) are cleared during odd semester exams, and even semester backlogs during even semester exams.
  2. Form Fill-Up Fee: A nominal examination fee per backlog paper is charged during university exam registration.
  3. Internal Marks Retention: Your internal sessional marks (out of 30) from your regular semester are retained. You only re-appear for the 70-mark external theory or practical paper.

Year Back & Credit Promotion Criteria

To be promoted to higher semesters, BEU follows a credit-accumulation system:

  • Promotion to 2nd Year (3rd Semester): A student must earn at least 50% of the total credits prescribed for the 1st and 2nd semesters combined.
  • Promotion to 3rd Year (5th Semester): You must clear all 1st year foundational subjects without any active backlog in semester 1 and 2.
  • Promotion to 4th Year (7th Semester): You must clear all 2nd year subjects.

If a student fails to acquire the requisite credits, they face an academic Year Back, meaning they cannot attend the next year's regular classes until backlogs are cleared.

Grace Marks Policy

BEU provides a student-friendly grace marks provision under specific conditions:

  • If a candidate is failing in only one theory subject by a narrow margin (usually 1 to 5 marks), the university academic council may award grace marks to declare the student 'PASS', provided the candidate secures the required aggregate marks overall.
  • Grace marks are indicated on the official university grade card.

Summary Advice

Keep track of your daily attendance using the Apna College Bihar Attendance Tracker feature. Never let your attendance slide below 75%, and if you ever incur a backlog, prioritize clearing it in the very next immediate cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions on BEU Attendance & Backlogs

Q1: Is medical leave counted towards the 75% attendance requirement?

Under BEU ordinances, medical leave can be considered for condoning shortfalls down to a minimum of 65% attendance upon timely submission of a certified medical practitioner's certificate and hospital records countersigned by your college Principal.

Q2: What is the exact credit requirement to avoid a year-back in BEU?

To be promoted to the next academic year, students must secure at least 50% of the total cumulative credits offered up to that academic session. If a student fails to earn the minimum credit threshold due to multiple active backlogs, they are detained in the same academic year (Year-Back).

Q3: Does a backlog cleared in carry-over exams affect campus placement eligibility?

Most corporate recruiters specify "No standing / active backlogs at the time of the drive". If you have already cleared your backlogs through carry-over examinations and your current standing backlog count is zero, you are fully eligible for hiring drives.
